Introduction

The Cumberland UEY "Help Directory" is an inventory of community agencies that provide programs and services to preschool children and their families.

The inventory is not exhaustive and is an evolving document. It will be updated regularly as new information is received.

The agencies listed here have been in continuous operation for more than twelve months, and also meet criteria adopted by the Cumberland UEY initiative after considering both the unique characteristics of the Cumberland community and the experience of UEY pilot sites.

Criteria for Inclusion

These agencies offer programs, services, and resources that are:

  • targeted at preschool children and/or their families;
  • available to Cumberland County residents (may be offered at more than one site);
  • inclusive of, but not necessarily limited to:
    • Health and wellness (public health, mental health, medical facilities and primary health care facilities);
    • Early education and childcare (licensed child care, kindergarten and preschool, volunteer pre-primary program, library programs for young children and their families);
    • Leisure, recreation and culture (play programs, sports, theatre, art and music, cultural heritage);*
    • Parent support and other professional services (parent and family-centered programs and other professional services whose mandate includes: assessment, identification, and intervention).

*Although extensive opportunities for informal recreation exist across Cumberland County, they are not included in this directory. For detailed information on organized programs and services, consult the Cumberland Active Communities Coalition (CACC) resource guide under "Community Groups" on the Town of Amherst website: http://www.town.amherst.ns.ca.

HELP Directory

Many agencies for families and young children offer programs/services that meet criteria for inclusion in several HELP categories. To reduce redundancy, we have listed the agencies alphabetically and provided a brief description of some of the services they provide. Phone numbers and e-mail addresses (where available) are provided for those seeking further information.
